2009 Summer Intensive Guest Faculty

Amy Moore Morton (July 27-31)

Ms. Morton began her training with Cheryl Van Metre and danced under her direction for
many years. She was a principal dancer with the Appalachian Ballet Company for over 15
years and danced leading classical roles in
The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Don
Quixote
, Swan Lake, Giselle and many more. Ms. Morton has taught ballet for more than
20 years focusing on the Royal Academy of Dance training syllabus. Ms. Morton was
appointed Artistic Director of the Appalachian Ballet Company in 1997. A number of
commissioned works were created for Ms. Morton and the company. As a choreographer,
Ms. Morton has created both classical and contemporary ballets and has garnered
national acclaim through the Regional Dance of America Organization. Regional and
professional companies throughout the southeast have performed Ms. Morton's original
ballets. She won the Monticello Award in 1993 for her comedic ballet
With Chaplin from
Regional Dance America and set the work on ballet companies including the Louisville
Ballet, Boca Ballet Theatre and Southeast Alabama Dance Company.

In 1998, the Knoxville Arts Council named Ms. Morton Performing Artist of the Year. She
has been featured on the cover of
Dance Teacher Now magazine. Ms. Morton has been
the recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission. She
was a 2005 graduate of Leadership Blount in Maryville, Tennessee.

Ms. Morton was chosen in 2004 to participate in the Chore-plan in Carlisle, Pennsylvania
with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Only three choreographers throughout North
America and Europe were chosen to set new classical works on the company. In 2005,
New York composer, Pat Rasile and Ms. Morton collaborated on three new ballets based
on the children's books of the late Libba Moore Gray, Amy's mother. They were presented
by the Appalachian Ballet Company and the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra at the
historic Tennessee Theatre.

Morton's ballet
In the Shadows was performed at the National Ballet Festival in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania in spring of 2007 and she was awarded the Tier Project Choreographic
Award from the Southeast, sending her to Seattle, Washington to create a new ballet. Ms.
Morton sits on the national board for Regional Dance America and on the board for the
Southeast Region.

Ms. Morton's daughters, Kylie and Laura are also dancers.

Olga Pavlova (August 3-7)

Olga Pavlova, was born in Moscow, Russia. She graduated from the Moscow Academic
School, the official school of the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet. She also holds a Master
degree in Teaching and Choreography from Moscow Academy of Professional Arts. She
won the Gold Medal and First Prize at the Maya Plisetskaya Second International Ballet
Competition in St. Petersburg, and the diploma at the Rudolf Nureyev Second
International Ballet Competition in Budapest.

Recently she was named DFW Metroplex Critics Choice Best Ballerina 2007. Her
repertoire includes principal roles in fifty-four ballets, including two ballets created
especially for her: Eddy Toussaint’s
Edith Piaf and Paul Mejia’s Inspiration. During her
career, she has toured to over thirty countries with Yuri Grigorovich and Maya Plisetskaya.
Olga has been a principal ballerina with Metropolitan Classical Ballet Company based in
Arlington, Texas since 2003. She joined the company with her husband, Yevgeni
Anfinogenov, her partner on stage.

Stephen Sanford (August 10-14)

Stephen Sanford was born in South Bend, Indiana and began his ballet studies at the
age of eight at Southhold Dance Theater. At the age of 15, he received a scholarship to
dance at North Carolina School of the Arts under the direction of Duncan Noble. He then
went on to train in the Balanchine style under the direction of Dan Duell and Patricia Blair
at Ballet Chicago Studio Company. He has also trained with the School of American
Ballet and Houston Ballet.  

He has performed as a guest artist with the Tulsa Ballet in
Romeo & Juliet as well as the
role of Von Rothbart in
Swan Lake for St. Louis Ballet under the direction of Gen Horiuchi.
Stephen joined the Grand Rapids Ballet Company in 2001under the direction of Gordon
Pierce Schmidt. Some of his favorite and most memorable roles include Snow King and
Arabian in
The Nutcracker, Katchei the Immortal in The Firebird, Quincey in Dracula, and
the Beast in
Beauty and The Beast.

He enjoys teaching the adult ballet classes at the School of the Grand Rapids Ballet and
Ada Dance Academy. Stephen and his wife Jennifer have a daughter, Julia and a son,
Andrew.

2009 Summer Guest Faculty

Addison O'Day
Mr. O'Day is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He began his training at the age of 16 at his
parent's studio in Detroit, and was later accepted into the Rock Summer School program
in Pennsylvania. He also trained with the Schools of American Ballet and San Francisco
Ballet. Mr. O'Day has performed numerous solo and principal roles with the Alabama
Ballet and is currently an adjunct faculty member of the Maggie Allesee Department of
Dance at Wayne State University. He has most recently danced principal roles in
performances of
The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Aladdin and original
choreographic pieces throughout Michigan.

Jennifer Mentzer
Ms. Mentzer began her dance training at Geiger Classic Ballet Academy in 1993, and was
a member of the Michigan Classic Ballet Company from 1998-2001. In 2002 she began
training in International Latin and American Smooth ballroom dance. She has taught
ballroom dance classes of all levels and types, and has competed in International
Ballroom competitions winning numerous gold medals in International Latin. Ms. Mentzer
became a certified zumba Instructor in April 2009. She currently is pursuing a degree in
exercise science at Oakland University. She will be teaching jazz and zumba classes at
Geiger Ballet this summer.
SUMMER PROGRAMS 2009

INTENSIVE SUMMER CAMP
July 27-August 14
Three weeks of multiple classes per day are taught by nationally renowned
guest faculty in a variety of dance disciplines. Classes are open to students
eight years old and up with previous training.

This program is a day camp. Level A & B students attend Monday-Friday and
Level C students attend Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Classes offered are
Ballet, Pointe, Variations, Repertoire, Jazz, Modern, Pilates,
Choreography/Creative Movement, and Stage Make-Up Application. A
demonstration/social for the parents is held each Friday showcasing material
learned during the week.

Tuition Costs
Level A & B:
3 weeks - $900
2 weeks - $650
Level C:
3 weeks - $525
2 weeks - $400
must take 2 consecutive weeks
Housing available upon request.

EXTENDED SUMMER PROGRAM
July 6-August 20
An extension of the school year with classes beginning at 4:30pm.
Classes offered are:
Early Childhood for 4-6 year olds (July 6, 13 & 20)
Intro to Ballet for beginners age 7 and up (July 27, August 3 & 10)
Teen/Adult Open Ballet (offered on Mondays all seven weeks)
Child Ballet, Intermediate Ballet, Pointe, Character/Jazz 1
(weeks of July 6, 13, 20 & August 17)
New this summer: Zumba
(offered 6:45-7:45pm on Wednesdays July 8, 15, 22 and August 19)

Zumba is a Latin inspired, dance/fitness class that incorporates Latin and
International music with simple dance movements. The class format combines
aerobic, interval and resistance training while creating a dynamic and exciting
environment.
Zumba is easy to follow and is for non-dancers and dancers
alike.
The program has explosive and passionate music which makes
participants keep coming back for the fun and positive results. Zumba is
indeed great for the mind, body and spirit!

NEW THIS YEAR:
APPRENTICE PROGRAM
July 13-July 24
This two week program is for upper level students who want intensive summer
training to prepare for upcoming auditions, a return to university or professional
companies. Classes will be held 10am-2pm Monday through Friday and will
consist of Ballet/Pointe Technique, Modern, Pilates and Repertoire.

Tuition - $250 per week or $56 per day

ANNOUNCING SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY 2010

STEPHEN SANFORD (July 26-30)
Stephen is a member of the Grand Rapids Ballet. He began his ballet studies
at the age of eight at
Southold Dance Theater (Indiana). He continued his
training at the
North Carolina School of the Arts, Ballet Chicago Studio
Company, School of American Ballet and Houston Ballet. Stephen will be
joining us for a second consecutive year.

CATRINA CHOATE (August 2-6)
Catrina began her ballet studies in Monroe, Michigan. She later attended the
School of American Ballet and upon graduation joined the Miami City Ballet.
She currently teaches ballet and modern classes internationally. Catrina is
also a guild certified
Feldenkrais practitioner.

ANYA EVANS (August 9-13)
Anya began her training at the age of four in Westbury, Long Island. She later
studied at the Ballet Russe School and at the
School of American Ballet. She
performed professionally with the
New York City Ballet, American Ballet
Theatre, London's Festival Ballet, Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens and the
Royal Ballet. This is Anya's second summer with us.
